GUIDE PRICE: Kitchen £54k+
This traditional Edwardian semi, with views over the lovely rear garden, had been extended a number of years ago to create a large, open plan kitchen, dining room, snug but the kitchen had started to feel a little little dated. The clients already had some beautiful paintings in the room so we took inspiration from one particular landscape in the adjoining snug to create a
coordinated colour scheme in the new kitchen, using a soft neutral paint for most of the cabinetry, then a striking, deep blue on the island for contrast. The original oak floor adds warmth which is reflected in the golden tones of the tiled splashback in the chimney mantle, again picking up details from the painting.
All the tall cabinets were positioned to the left of the dividing wall, almost out of sight, to ensure the main kitchen area felt open and airy. As there are no windows in this area, we opted to make a feature of the Belfast sink on the side wall, centred to two matching wall cabinets with decorative shelf between. This keeps the island surface clear for prep and serving, a useful area which is conveniently positioned for both the sink and cooker. An open oak shelving unit on the dining room side of the end of the island creates added interest and is a useful space for displaying some of the client’s many treasured pieces.
On the back of the dividing wall, a glazed dresser unit, painted in the same blue as the island, makes use of the extra wall space and is perfect for storing china and glassware next to the dining table, with a lovely little handmade antique chair alongside to create a pretty vignette.
The large larder unit, with matching quartz worktop inside, is perfect for storing small electrical appliances ready for use, the open shelving has matching china storage jars, while the oak spice racks on both doors adds additional storage for small jars and bottles. The beautiful oak drawers below are used to store dry goods, neatly out of sight, with attractive wicker baskets below for storing fresh fruit and vegetables.
